How Do You Use Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Are Malas
Mala is the primary Sanskrit term for prayer beads used for counting mantra or recitations. The ubiquitous mala is found in Tibetan Buddhist communities around the globe, either tied around the wrists or hanging from the fingers. They are typically accompanied by the humming of mantra recitations such as om mani padme, om tuttare, ture soha or mun maha-muniye soha. They are called trengwa when they are Tibetan. You can use your rosary to count the number of prayers. Even if you're not active in counting, the repeated recitation of the mantra while you move beads along the mala will aid in focusing and calming your mind. A string with around 108 beads is the most commonly used. These are made from precious and semi-precious stones or seeds, wood, wood, bone or any other substance. If you can complete 100 mantra recitations while moving through the mala, repeating the mantra for every bead, you are considered accomplished. The extra 8 beads are "spare" to compensate for any mistakes or miscalculations that you make along the way. We would like to state it is a common occurrence in Tibetan tradition, that there are no absolute rules with regard to malas and the way to determine your mantras. Every person is different in their approach. There are many ways to pray however, it is as much as the way you pray and what your intentions are. If you're meditating with your heart, while still using your mala to pray it, then you're doing the right thing! While the majority of sources advise you to hold your mala in your lefthand but certain Tibetans prefer to hold them in their right. You may have a prayer tool in one hand and mala in the other. It is recommended to keep the mala in your left hand, and the tool for prayer in your right. Your mala can be used by beginning with the bead nearest to the "guru". The mala should be placed between your thumb (or index finger) and place it in the middle. Repeat the mantra silently or loudly. You can then move on to another bead by moving your thumb in a slow manner. After that you will repeat your mantra. When you get to the guru beads again you'll have accomplished 100 mantras. There is no need to count every one of them. In this moment, the majority of Tibetans do not cross the guru's message, instead, but reverse it by turning the mala around, and then re-starting a circuit of 100, returning the direction they came. It is something we do because of habit, not for an exclusive reason.

Caring for your Mala
Your mala will grow in spiritual importance as you use and share it with teachings, and possibly get it blessed by your Guru. Although it's not holy in its own right, we must give it respect. That means you should not put it in the dirt, set everyday objects on top of it or throw it away. Tibetans put their malas around their necks and wrists even when they are not in use. These malas are not meant to be worn in a necklace. It is possible to hang it in a prominent place like in front of your altar, or in the corner if you don't use for a long time. It's kept on a bookcase underneath our altar. It is up to you to take care of it and keep your eyes open.
